Thoracic Manifestations of Blunt Chest Trauma
Kim Jung-Sook

Abstract
Approximately one-half on the deaths from auto accidents result either directly or indirectly from thoracic injury. Because serious injury to the thoracic contents may exist with absent or minimal symptoms, a careful radiologic investigation of the thorax is important in all patients with known chest trauma. Thoracic injuries range from relatively unimportant problems, such as simple rib fractures, to lacerations of the great vessels and large airways, which if not recognized and treated promptly, often will result in the death of the patient. Fortunately, chest radiographs nearly always demonstrate findings associated with most of these significant injuries. CT proved useful in diagnosing unsuspected chest injuries, showing their full extent, and directing specific interventions to immediately optimize patient care. The development of MDCT scanner has revolutionized diagnostic strategy of trauma patients. The fast scanning time of MDCT allows for single-breath-hold scanning, fewer motion artifacts, and improved contrast bolus imaging. MDCT provides motion free images of high spatial resolution and the multiplanar reformat and 3D volume rendering images. Therefore, this article reviews the spectrum of thoracic inuries following blunt trauma, focusing on the radiographic and CT findings.
